However, for those travellers that haven't experienced communal living, the thought of sharing a room with seven strangers of varying hygiene standards and sleeping patterns might be a little daunting! Here's a few observations that I've made during my time living in hostels:
- Be considerate: don't slam doors if entering the room late, or leaving early. Keep the lights on as little as possible if people are sleeping - a headtorch is useful! Using a roommates bag as a toilet is never a good thing when inebriated. I recommend ear plugs and a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper.
- Don't steal other people's property: that includes food from the fridge! It's just plain wrong. At the same time, lock up your valuables, even if for a short time such as going to the shower.
- Be open: it's a great way to meet lots of people and get tips on places to go, etc. I still keep in touch with people I met ages ago. Not all travellers are looking for a "good time", or looking to rip you off.
- Trust your instincts: if you feel uneasy about your surroundings - get out. I was staying in a hostel in San Francisco in the Tenderloin district, and after one night decided to get out quickly! Sometimes it is about the comfort, and it's only money, right?
- Book ahead: some of the most reputable hostels are booked out weeks in advance, so it pays to book at least a few days ahead. You can always cancel if plans change.
- Communal living: sometimes it's cheaper to stay in a unisex room. Yes men snore, yes they expel gas. But so can females! Bathrooms can be shared as well, so ladies, be willing to share your beauty routine with members of the opposite sex. Be prepared to be tolerant in any case.
Remember, hostel life doesn't have to be all like the movie Hostel!
