In the limelight

Two seconds in Florida is long enough to learn that everyone goes bananas for key limes. I had read enough Carl Hiaasen books to know that in the Sunshine State they eat something called key lime pie which they say kicks the arse of the all-American apple pie.

On our way to the Florida Keys we stopped at a fruit stand called 'Robert Is Here' which boasted the best key lime milkshakes in Florida.

It was such a popular tourist spot that there was a saxophonist and keyboard player belting out tunes and people were lining up for their special shakes.

We shared one and still couldn't finish it but not because it wasn't delicious - it was. At first you sort of feel like you're sucking a lemon but after a while the sweet and sour mix kicks in and it is kind of like heaven. Mmmm.

So in Key West we graduated to the almighty key lime pie. We didn't want to enjoy it too much out of loyalty to our mums, who both make the best desserts in the world.

But again, it was really something special. Key lime pies are just like cheesecakes. They are really sour but topped with either cream or meringue to make them sweet. To die for. Just don't tell our mums!

Next stop: How come in WalMart the family sized bags of chips are big enough to use as rubbish sacks?
