One inconvenient stomach bug

We were on board the ever-swaying train from Machu Picchu when the sickness kicked in. I'd been feeling ill all day but this surpassed anything I had felt in a while.

The train was swaying from side to side in a tortuous rock that was making me want to throw up.

I had my ears covered because two Americans were discussing what gross food they'd been eating and if I heard another word they might have gotten a close up of what I'd been eating.

For two hours I sat feeling that way, head in hands and horrified by the whole situation. Trips to the toilet were fruitless and I had almost given up on any relief when the train attendants came through with the food trolley. It was one of those wide buggers that covers the whole aisle.

So of course that was the exact moment when I got that awful feeling like I was going to throw up. I sat there waiting for the trolley men to finish their round and then I dashed like a mad woman to the toilet.

I threw up with the door open because I didn't have time to secure it shut. It was so embarrassing!

But what followed was worse when I went to bed a shivery mess and rose all night to go to the toilet. At 8am we were leaving for a plane trip and a boat ride to reach the jungle.

I stayed awake wondering how I would manage the mission. I got to Puerto Maldonado without any more public displays of projection but it was a tender few days in the jungle.

Next stop: We hit the Amazon jungle and meet the ultimate jungle guide Victor.
