La Boca: The Mouth

We braved Buenos Aires traffic to tour the city on a bright orange bicycle. It was part of a fun package we had booked through our hostel. It didn't feel like much fun the first time a bus roared beside me and I could only close my eyes and pray it wouldn't squish me into the pavement.

But we survived and the bike tour was great fun in the end. Our tour guide was fantastic and she knew a lot about the history of Buenos Aires, which was interesting after four days in the city. The coolest part of the tour was riding to La Boca (The Mouth) neighbourhood which I'm sure is like no other 'hood on earth.

The poor immigrant settlers made their homes here from cheap wood and corrugated iron and when it came time for a lick of paint, they used scraps from La Boca's boat yards. They used loud reds and when that ran out, they switched to blues and then greens and so on. The result is houses painted in many different colours and it's a tradition which the locals have kept up - it's also a thriving tourist spot, one which looks like it's made out of Lego.

My favourite aspect of La Boca however was the Diego Maradona lookalikes, charging tourists a fee to have their photo taken with them. La Boca is Maradona's hometown and he played for La Boca Juniors. I would have preferred a few David Beckhams but the fake Diegos were pretty amusing.

That night we said farewell to Buenos Aires (reluctantly) and took an overnight bus to the adventure city Mendoza in Northern Argentina, where I had one of my dreams come true: I met real cowboys! Keep reading to hear about my night with a pack of 'gauchos'.
