A brush with fame in St Petersburg

I turned into a shameless paparazzi snapper in St Petersburg when we scored free tickets to the Grand Prix.

I have always admired Indy car driver Scott Dixon in that 'Kiwi boy done good' sort of way and I also find him very attractive.

So when he zipped passed me on a little Honda motorbike to get to his flash race car, I got out my camera and started clicking.

Then I found myself doing it again when the gorgeous American driver Danica Patrick battled crowds of drooling men to get to her RV.

But it was Scott Dixon who had my undivided attention and I stood for about an hour waiting for him to show up. It was worth it.

I kind of wanted to scream out 'Hey Scott, I'm a Kiwi too' as if we shared some sort of special bond. Just me, him and four million other New Zealanders.

The St Petersburg Grand Prix had many memorable moments. I had my first 'corn dog' which I'd never realised is what we call a 'hot dog on a stick' back home.

I had my first cup of iced tea and it only took a sip to see why Americans love that drink so much.

And Tim and I toured a US$1.8 million RV which looked as though the Hiltons would holiday in it. We had fun walking around the gold-plated interior, pretending we were seriously considering the purchase.

Although I'm pretty sure my ratty traveling sandals gave me away as a pauper.
