Gringos attempt Peru's national dish

Cerviche is the national dish of Peru and in the country where Tim had eaten an alpaca steak and a guinea pig, he had to try what all the Peruvians cherish like fish and chips. We knew nothing about cerviche, except that it is a fish dish.

Ignorance is not bliss when it leads to a pile of raw fish on your plate and fire burning inside your mouth.

We tried not to show our shock when we saw the translucent fish.

The waitress warned Tim not to try the garnish which was a slice of red chili that she said was deadly hot.

Cerviche is fish marinated in lots of lemon juice, chili and herbs. The flavours are completely delicious together but I couldn't get over the texture of the meat and the heat in it was destroying Tim.

Two of the waitresses were buckled over their serving trays in hysterics as he coughed, spluttered and sculled half a beer in seconds.

We left almost the whole meal. No offence, Peru, but us gringos just couldn't handle your favourite dish. Our palates are more used to having our fish battered and deep fried.

Next stop: The awesome Galapagos Islands.

If you just like eating fish and chips then why the heck did you leave home? I bet you have packed tea bags from home to take with you just in case you might hate the local tea!!!
Your'e not travellers.....

Alpaca steak and guinea pig is pretty adventurous!

Cerviche, or ceviche or kilawin depending on the country you visit, including New Zealand is not a particularly adventurous dish. Try Balut, Chicharon or sizzling sisig (replaced with chicken intestines) to test your oesophagul reflex.

I know you gringos are not prepared for the rest of the world's rich and varied culinary art. You people should travel further than just Australia or England, the world is much bigger than that!!

Marinated fish is for beginners. Raw fish is a half-step forward. Try smoked dog in northern Thailand. Mind you, they do take the fur off. Or most of it anyway.

hey Gordon, for first time kiwi travellers you have to start somewhere and i think alpaca steak and guinea pig is as good as any where. I have eaten some pretty eye watering and throat disintegrating curries in both London and Thailand and enjoyed some of them on more than one occasion, that doesn't mean to say i don't still appreciate a great kiwi classic such as a battered fish and some chips drizzled with nz's finest watties tomato sauce. Just because someone hasnt enoyed a national dish mad

FYI NZ Watties tomato sauce is no more as it is made in China

Eating whacky local delicacies doesn't make you a more authentic or less authentic traveller than anyone else in my opinion. At least they tried ceviche, there's no rule to say they have to like it.
