Cerveza saves the day

Pablo, our minivan driver while we were in Mendoza, became a bit of a legend to all the travellers we met. He accompanied us on our sunset horse trek and joked with everyone and shared his sugary mate (tea) with us.

So we felt a bit sorry for our amigo Pablo when his battered old minivan broke down in the middle of nowhere when he was trying to take us home from the hot springs. No worries though. With a cheeky smile on his face he got out his trusty spanner and set to work on the engine.

We stood around chatting with the nice couple we'd met who were from Perth and more than happy to talk about life downunder with the two from "Kiwiland" as they called it. Every now and then we'd give the van a push, but to no avail.

After two hours it felt like the van would never work again. I decided to get a drink and asked Pablo if he wanted one. He rattled off a list: "Si, lemonada, coca cola, cerveza" but it was when he said cerveza that he had his customary cheeky grin on his face. Beer it was.

I came back with a can of Quilmes and Pablo accepted it happily and within five minutes the van had roared into life. It was hilarious watching Pablo dance around the parking lot with happiness. He grabbed his beer and declared that it had saved the day.

He made me take a photo of him then and it's one of my favourites from the trip so far, perfectly capturing the moment. It was sad saying goodbye to Pablo but we were happy to see the old girl ticking over again.
