It takes two (coordinated people) to tango

Buenos Aires has a way of making you do things you don't want to do and we ended up having a Tango lesson pretty much by accident. With Tim's fragile ankle still strapped up, we booked a Tango Dinner and Show, explaining to the lady we couldn't do the lesson.

Talk about lost in translation. We turned up at the Complejo Tango in jandals and they ferried us into a dance studio. We would learn some Tango moves whether we wanted to or not. This was Argentina.

You know when a dance instructor says some steps are basic that she is seriously overestimating the talents of the 40 or so clumsy tourists gathered before her. We had two teachers and they moved beautifully, making us feel even less coordinated. There were only eight steps to learn and even then it was like herding wild sheep for the poor instructors.

We stepped all over each other, we stumbled into walls. If the teachers weren't careful we sideswiped them. It was an awful spectacle and I laughed for the entire hour. I'd never felt so ridiculous.

Tim and I couldn't get it right. He was supposed to lead but I would forget and take off, always the feminist even when trying not to be. Then if I got it right and waited for him, he'd go in the wrong direction and we'd fall over each other. At one point an American couple we'd been chatting to were openly laughing at us. I would have laughed at us too.

We discovered it takes two people who aren't us to Tango. But it was a lot of fun and a classic Argentina experience. Afterwards over a three-course meal, the Complejo Tango experts rubbed our left feet in our faces by putting on a stunning show - it was impressive and beautiful and some of their moves surely defied gravity.

If you go to Buenos Aires and you have the chance to try some Tango, give it a go. I guarantee you will have a great laugh, even if you leave feeling even less of an expert than when you arrived. And another great experience is going to a futbol game, which IŽll tell you all about in the next post. It makes for a truly loco afternoon in Buenos Aires.
