On this 'overseas experience' Tim and I had done a lot of cultural things and we'd seen a lot of wildlife.
We'd been to the jungle, soaked with the sea lions in the Galapagos Islands and walked through ancient Incan ruins.
It is the city of chain restaurants and parking lots as big as small Kiwi towns. It's where all black men look like glamorous rappers and wear t-shirts 20 sizes too big for them. It's where kids seem to be constantly about to burst with Coked-up energy and excitement.
And it's where you can spend hundreds of dollars in gift stores which manage to turn every household item into Jurassic Park, Incredible Hulk and Shrek merchandise.
You can tell the American theme park goers from the international visitors. They are the ones who immediately don their Dr Seuss t-shirts with 'Thing 1' and 'Thing 2' on them and spend the day as walking advertisements.
But I must admit I got caught up in the commercialism of it all. I tried to hold back but every shop seemed to be screaming at me that I couldn't live without a Betty Boop pen.
That list would have been longer if Tim had not pulled me away from the Dr Seuss t-shirt. No honestly, it was for my nephew.
