Jaquie Brown

I have worked in TV and Radio in NZ for 15 years, after getting my start in student radio. Currently I can be found reporting on the strange and wonderful on TV3's Campbell Live. I also host C4's bent music game show Pop! Goes the Weasel.

Is playing computer games and watching TV actually good for your brain?

TV and computer games have a bad reputation for stealing people's social lives and dulling their minds, but is there a good side to watching countless hours of TV and playing PS3 late into the night?

I grew up addicted to TV and my parents had to wean me off using a special token system. I did house work in return for TV tokens!

They were concerned that by watching too much TV I'd rot my brain, but I think the opposite has been true. I think it encouraged my imagination and inspired me to follow the career I have. My brother was a computer addict and now works with computers as a career and has a real gift for it. Are we exceptions?

I'd love to know what New Zealanders think about this.

Well, you might be. But I'm like your brother, ae. I really like computers. Also, my favourite TV Shows (Dark Oracle, Teen Titans, HOUSE, Ugly Betty, SVU, CSI Las Vegas, Cirminal Intent) all spark ideas for the stories I write.

I agree to some extent with watching the Tv and playing computer games, or online, at times you learn. I think as long as your not glued and break away often to do other activities. If your inspired by your imagination get it down on paper or typed up.. story or song, thats what I do and it's also a good way to express feelings or frustrations in a creative way by making and building on your own story line, thats my favourite show.

Today TV programmes are so much more informative & covers a broader spectrum of Technology that it can be educational as well as detrimental, as can Computer Games. If used constructively they do make you use your brain problem solve in so many different ways. Children learn to solve problems faster than we did as they have more tools available to them, if monitored properly they can be used well which is why so many kids play PC Games & are good at them...

It can de-sense-er-tize (oh spell it yourself) the brain. Monitor the kids, yeah right, who has the time to do that. TV & computer games are the babysitters of our generation.Maybe computer games allow your brain to develop good eye and hand coordination but so does playing with a ball outside.TV can be educational, yeah some programes are but at what time of the day.Making a career from it was obviously from getting out of the house..interesting:) I'm 50/50, can't decide, brain freeze, why? :)

Hey, i honestly think (in opinion with games) it really depends on the games you play, and the person you are. TV shows are a bit different, because depending on the shows you watch, you'll have a different out-look. Im only 13 so i still play computer games.....my mum is constantly on my case, getting me to do homework, its kind of like how you had to do chores for watching TV.

Thanks

My friend is 22 yr-old and has done nothing for his life. He checks music, movies, and concert 24/7. He has social problems, talk inappropriately and always with low-self-esteem.
Last time I mentioned about that a particular singer is more popular than Jesus. He acted out and saying that listening to music is good.
He always get thing too personal and offensive. It is very hard to talk to him. And I can never approach different topics other than music, movies, traveling and concerts.

I'm encouraging my friend to do something different such as start online radio. He can't stop shopping for songs and leave his computer.
He whines all the time when he opens his mouth to ask for anything.
A 22 yr-old guy with no job experiences, playing/watching tv, or youtube all the time,
writing porno, have sensitive emotions and heavy temper. Do you see think it is fine?
Should people around him worry about it?
